High Pressure Washer: Flow, Power & Pressure – Complete Guide
1. Core Physical Formula (Theoretical Values)
The fundamental relationship in high pressure washers is: hydraulic power = pressure × flow. Knowing any two values lets you calculate the third.
Most practical formula (pressure in bar, flow in L/min, power in kW):
Hydraulic power (kW) = Pressure (bar) × Flow (L/min) ÷ 600
If using MPa:
Hydraulic power (kW) = Pressure (MPa) × Flow (L/min) ÷ 60
In imperial horsepower (HP):
Hydraulic power (HP) = Pressure (bar) × Flow (L/min) ÷ 450
2. Unit Conversions
- 1 MPa = 10 bar = 1000 kPa
- 1 bar = 0.1 MPa
3. Motor Power vs Hydraulic Power (Theory vs Reality)
The formulas above give hydraulic power – the power actually delivered to the water. However, the motor must overcome internal pump losses (friction, leakage, temperature rise), so the motor's rated power must exceed the hydraulic power.
Motor power = Hydraulic power ÷ Pump efficiency
Common triplex or quintuplex plunger pumps in high pressure washers have efficiencies between 85% and 95%. For example, a machine with 20 kW hydraulic power and 90% pump efficiency requires at least 20 ÷ 0.9 ≈ 22.2 kW motor; typical choices are 22 kW or 30 kW motors.
4. Engineering Rule of Thumb (Most Used for Practical Sizing)
For quick mental calculations, engineers combine efficiency, safety margin, and piping losses into a single factor:
Motor power (kW) ≈ Pressure (bar) × Flow (L/min) ÷ 500
This formula gives about 15%–25% more than theoretical hydraulic power, covering pump efficiency variations and startup overload. It's the most common approach for manufacturers and sales staff. Note: At 500 bar, motor power (kW) equals flow (L/min) – a handy 1:1 ratio.
5. Reverse Formulas (Find the Third Given Two)
- Given motor power and flow, find pressure:
Pressure (bar) = Motor power (kW) × 500 ÷ Flow (L/min) — using rule of thumb
Pressure (bar) = Motor power (kW) × 600 × Pump efficiency ÷ Flow (L/min) — theoretical - Given motor power and pressure, find flow:
Flow (L/min) = Motor power (kW) × 500 ÷ Pressure (bar) — rule of thumb - Given pressure and flow, find motor power:
Motor power (kW) ≈ Pressure (bar) × Flow (L/min) ÷ 500 — most common quick calculation
6. Practical Example
Take a 30 kW motor and 20 L/min flow:
- Using theoretical formula (100% efficiency): Pressure = 30 × 600 ÷ 20 = 900 bar (purely theoretical, impossible in practice)
- With 90% actual efficiency: Hydraulic power = 30 × 0.9 = 27 kW, Pressure = 27 × 600 ÷ 20 = 810 bar
- Using rule of thumb: Pressure = 30 × 500 ÷ 20 = 750 bar
